Initial parent/carer intake meeting (1 hour - parents/carers only)

This can be conducted via Telehealth or in person, depending on location.

The intake meeting is an opportunity for parent/carer and therapist to meet and for the therapist to learn about your child's developmental history, their interests and strengths, your family's experiences and the presenting concerns.

As the expert on the child, information and insights from the parent/carer are integral to developing a plan for how play therapy can support the child and family. We discuss your child's needs, your hopes for play therapy and identify focus areas for therapy so that an individualised treatment plan can be made.

The therapist will provide you with information on the play therapy process. You will be sent an intake form to complete prior to your meeting. You will also be invited to share accessibility needs and discuss how I can make sessions as comfortable as possible for you and your child.

Play Therapy sessions (45 minutes)

Sessions are weekly. Sessions are billed for one hour, which includes 45 minutes session time and 15 minutes clean up and case noting/planning.

Sessions are structured to provide consistency and predictability for the child. The therapist ensures each session begins and ends in the same way. The playroom is set up in the same way each session.

Most sessions are child-led. This means your child will get to choose the toys and play in almost any way they need to. Toys and resources have been specially chosen to facilitate representation and expression of a range of emotions and experiences.

The Play Therapist uses their clinical skills to observe and interpret the content and themes of your child's play, and supports them to explore, process and express their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Throughout the session, your child is supported with consistency, predictability, empathy and unconditional acceptance. Limits are set if required, to keep the child, therapist and toys safe, and this is done with consistency, kindness and positive regard for your child.

Progress meetings / Parent/carer support meetings (30 minutes to 1 hour)

Progress meetings provide an opportunity for the therapist to give an update on the child's progress in play therapy, without speaking about the child in front of them. This allows the therapist and parent/carer to speak freely and discuss any important issues. Progress meetings allow the parent/carer to update the therapist on any changes/shifts for the child. Progress meetings are recommended every 6-8 play therapy sessions.

They may be conducted via Telehealth or phone call. Your therapist may also provide progress updates via email.

Parent/carer support meetings are also available via Telehealth for the parent/carer to seek support. The therapist can provide a safe space for the parent/carer to discuss any parenting or child related challenges or concerns, and identify where the family may need additional support.

* Other sessions/meetings, where required, such as school/kinder observations, Care Team meetings.
